Our tax director Richard Bullivant has spent 3+ years as a Corporation Tax Officer for the Falkland Islands Government Tax Office in Stanley. Prior to this Richard was a fully qualified tax inspector for HMRC with 11 years experience.
The Falkland Islands is a great place to do business, but it has its own tax system which is wholly separate from the UK. We are here to provide all aspects of tax advice and services to those in or considering working in the Falkland Islands.
Whatever your plans, we are here to help.
Falkland Islands tax may seem relatively simple, with taxes on income and profits and relatively little else. Unlike many countries it does not attempt to increase the tax take with VAT (or GST), inheritance tax, capital gains (in most cases), duty on fuel or the many other taxes that have become part of our daily lives around the world.
That being said, the income and corporate taxation regime is a challenge, although the Falkland Islands are proudly British, as an overseas territory it administers its own tax system. It has its own complexities and differences from other tax regimes, in addition your tax returns will be personally reviewed by a competent tax officer and compliance checks are often raised. Our tax director, did this role for over 3 years in the Falkland Islands tax office, and knows better than most the issues likely to be found.
If you're coming from abroad this can add further challenges, either interpreting the one Double Taxation Agreement with the UK or generally considering your tax status and which income and profits are rightly taxable in the Falkland Islands (if any).
The most common excuse I ever heard working for the Falkland Islands tax office was that they didn't realise they had to pay tax in the Falkland Islands. We are here to help you avoid this pitfall, alongside the interest and penalties it likely includes. People come and go in the Falkland Islands and overall can arrive freely, nobody will inform you that you need to pay tax, you are expected to have done your own due diligence and made the necessary arrangements.
The Falkland Islands is a great place to do business, there are ample opportunities and more work available than there is the capacity to do. On the whole, it is has a business friendly tax regime, if you're paying tax in the UK or a similar economy, you're unlikely to be worse off in the Falkland Islands. In many cases and with the right tax advice, you could well be better.
